Coastal Highway: IYC urges Tinubu to retain original route

The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide appealed to President Bola Tinubu to direct the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to retain the original route of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway approved by the Federal Executive Council instead of diverting it to the existing East-West Road from Ondo State. The council warned that the diversion would undermine the interests of Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, demanded release of approved designs, immediate start of work on all affected axes, and argued that terrain and cost concerns were invalid given the region's economic contributions and existing successful projects in swampy areas.

Donald Duke criticized Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri for defending the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, calling him a "local champion" for viewing it only through a Bayelsa lens rather than a national one. Duke argued the project is financially impractical, questions its necessity, and accuses the federal government of using it as a land grab, saying it should be assessed against Nigeria's overall financial capacity and competing needs.
